Michigan’s RNC National Committeeman

At yesterday’s Michigan Republican State Committee meeting, I was unanimously elected to fill the remaining term of Rev. Keith Butler, who resigned due to his family and ministry obligations.

I am humbled and proud to take on this task on behalf of Michigan’s Republicans and I look forward to working with our state’s leadership to “win in 10″ and help turn Michigan around.  We have some great candidates and recruits who will be challenging Democrats at every level, in every town across Michigan.

My RNC Role

Chairman Steele appointed me to serve and Chair the RNC’s Technology Committee.  I hope to continue serving on that committee and help Republicans nationally insure we are at the forefront of using the latest technologies and tools available.

I am also one of 15 members of the 2012 presidential rules committee known as the Temporary Delegate Selection Committee which is preparing suggested changes in the upcoming nominating process.  We are scheduled to end this project by the RNC’s summer meeting.  We hope to release our recommendations next week.

So I have a full plate and look forward to doing my part to help Republicans nationally win from the White House to the State House!

THREE Michigan Congressional Seats in Play

We have a unique opportunity in Michigan this November.  Because of the national political environment and more importantly, because of the lack of political leadership on the part of Michigan Democrats, we have THREE congressional seats in play.

CD 1: Bart Stupak announced his retirement and several top candidates have emerged to run in this “open” seat including Jason Allen, Dan Benishek, Linda Goldthorpe, Don Hooper and Tom Stillings.

CD 7: Cong. Mark Schauer (D) has been completely out of touch with this mid-Michigan “common sense conservative” district.  He is being challenged by two strong challengers, former Congressman Tim Walberg and Brian Rooney.

CD 9: Cong. Gary Peters (D) who snuck in with 52% of the vote during the Obama landslide is being challenge by longtime GOP activists and civic leaders Paul Welday and Andy “Rocky” Raczkowski.

Going Forward

George Will: Public Sees Beyond Hysterics on Immigration

WASHINGTON — “Physician, heal yourself,” said the founder of the church in which Roger Mahony is a cardinal. He is the Catholic archbishop of Los Angeles and he should heed the founder’s admonition before accusing Arizonans of intemperateness. He says Arizona’s new law pertaining to illegal immigration involves “reverting to German Nazi and Russian Communist techniques whereby people are required to turn one another in to the authorities on any suspicion of documentation.”

“Our highest priority today,” he says, “is to bring calm and reasoning to discussions about our immigrant brothers and sisters.” His idea of calm reasoning is to call Arizona’s new law for coping with illegal immigration “the country’s most retrogressive, mean-spirited, and useless anti-immigrant law.” He also says it is “dreadful,” “abhorrent” and a “tragedy,” and its assumption is that “immigrants come to our country to rob, plunder and consume public resources.”

The problem of illegal immigration is inflaming Mahony, who strongly implies, as advocates for illegal immigrants often do, that any law intended to reduce such illegality is “anti-immigrant.” The implication is: Because most Americans believe such illegality should be reduced, most Americans are against immigrants

69% Oppose Higher Taxes To Lower Deficit

Only 18% of Americans are willing to pay higher taxes to lower the federal budget deficit, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

Sixty-nine percent (69%) are not willing to have their taxes raised to deal with deficits that are projected to rise to historic levels over the next decade. Thirteen percent (13%) more are not sure.

Want to get rich? Work for feds

Examiner Editorial
April 29, 2010

For decades, public sector unions have peddled the fantasy that government employees were paid less than their counterparts in the private sector. In fact, the pay disparity is the other way around. Government workers, especially at the federal level, make salaries that are scandalously higher than those paid to private sector workers. And let’s not forget private sector workers not only have to be sufficiently productive to earn their paychecks, they also must pay the taxes that support the more generous jobs in the public sector.

Data compiled by the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis reveals the extent of the pay gap between federal and private workers. As of 2008, the average federal salary was $119,982, compared with $59,909 for the average private sector employee.

The Man the White House Wakes Up To

Before he goes to sleep, between 11 and midnight, Dan Pfeiffer, the White House communications director, typically checks in by e-mail with the same reporter: Mike Allen of Politico, who is also the first reporter Pfeiffer corresponds with after he wakes up at 4:20. A hyperactive former Eagle Scout, Allen will have been up for hours, if he ever went to bed. Whether or not he did is one of the many little mysteries that surround him. The abiding certainty about Allen is that sometime between 5:30 and 8:30 a.m., seven days a week, he hits “send” on a mass e-mail newsletter that some of America’s most influential people will read before they say a word to their spouses.

Allen’s e-mail tipsheet, Playbook, has become the principal early-morning document for an elite set of political and news-media thrivers and strivers. Playbook is an insider’s hodgepodge of predawn news, talking-point previews, scooplets, birthday greetings to people you’ve never heard of, random sightings (“spotted”) around town and inside jokes. It is, in essence, Allen’s morning distillation of the Nation’s Business in the form of a summer-camp newsletter.

‘Hi. My Name Is America, and I’m a Deficit Addict.’

The giant federal deficit and debt—the subjects everybody loves to talk about but nobody likes to do anything about—move back to center stage in Washington this week as a new debt commission gets rolling and a high-profile conference is convened.

Don’t expect much to actually happen this year, an election year in which political leaders will grow increasingly allergic to making hard decisions. But here’s a humble suggestion on how to make a nice start in addressing the nation’s yawning deficit problems: The two parties could confess their original sins and acknowledge what needs to be done.
